Amazon.com, Inc. intends to expand their operations to New Kent County, Virginia at the exit 211 interchange along Interstate 64. The company plans to construct a 1 million plus square foot distribution center to serve other Amazon fulfillment centers at the New Kent City Center site.
“New Kent County staff, the Economic Development Authority and the Board of Supervisors have worked diligently over the past several years to draw major players, such as AutoZone, Target, and now Amazon, to our community. This is another major win for New Kent County business,” said New Kent County Board of Supervisors Chair, Ron Stiers.
The property purchased from Matan Companies will be constructed next to the AutoZone facility at the New Kent City Center site. Amazon anticipates moving forward with the construction project this month with construction tentatively finishing sometime in late 2027.
New Kent County did not provide economic development incentives related to the Amazon project. Amazon’s plans regarding capital investment and job creation are in the early stages and the company will share more as details are finalized. Amazon creates good jobs with competitive pay and benefits, including full health, vision and dental, 401k with 50 percent company match, and up to 20 weeks of paid parental leave. All Amazon employees go through hours of safety training and ongoing coaching and have access to continuing education opportunities through the company’s upskilling program, Career Choice, in which Amazon will pre-pay tuition for courses related to in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon.

Construction is underway on Building 3 at Port 460 in Suffolk, VA!
The 1,048,711-square-foot class A distribution center will be the largest building at the 5.1-million-square foot industrial park and will be completed in Q1 2027. Buildings 1 and 2, 339,150 square feet and 246,490 square feet, are completed and ready for lease or sale.
“With dirt moving and the pad being poured on the largest building planned for Port 460, Matan and Rockefeller Group are hitting an important milestone on the project,” said JP Matan, Director of Leasing, Matan Companies. “We have already been approached by some of the top users in the market who are looking for more than 1 million square feet. With this construction start, a tenant can expect to take occupancy next Spring.”
