The mission of the Phoenix Foundation of Maryland is to provide a state-recognized recovery high school that meets the individual educational needs of adolescents recovering from substance use disorder, Phoenix Recovery Academy, in Frederick, MD.
After thoughtful consideration, Phoenix Foundation has made the difficult decision to close Phoenix Recovery Academy, its recovery-centered high school program, at the conclusion of this school year, Friday, May 29, 2026.
Since opening in August 2020, Phoenix Recovery Academy has provided students and families with a supportive educational environment focused on recovery, connection, and academic progress. While the Foundation has served the community for seven years, the Academy program has created a meaningful impact over the past several school years, supporting students in continuing their education while navigating challenges and building brighter futures.
We are incredibly proud of the students served and grateful to the staff, families, volunteers, donors, and community partners who helped make this work possible.
Due to ongoing funding challenges affecting nonprofits locally and nationally, it is no longer financially sustainable to continue operating the Academy program. This decision was not made lightly and follows careful evaluation of available resources and long-term viability.
Our immediate focus is on supporting students and families through this transition and helping ensure continuity in their educational journey.
While this chapter is coming to a close, the impact of Phoenix Recovery Academy will continue through the lives of the students we served and the hope they carry forward.

Today we celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, guardians, and mother figures who show up with strength, patience, and unconditional love every single day.
In recovery, support matters, and so many of our students are where they are today because someone believed in them, encouraged them, and never gave up on them.
Thank you for the rides, the late-night talks, the second chances, the boundaries, the hope, and the love.
To all the moms and caregivers in our recovery community: we see you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate you today. 💜

Phoenix Board Member and Treasurer, Shelane Twentey, attended a recent press conference regarding the Frederick County Community Partnership Grant program and awards. We were awarded $20,000 in grant funds to provide clinical services to our students at Phoenix Recovery Academy! Our staff & students are so grateful!
Applications for this years' grant funds were intended to target the following priority areas:
✅Addressing Homelessness and Housing Solutions, such as housing insecurity, affordable housing opportunities, financial literacy, and initiatives to help people age in place
✅Quality of Life, initiatives, such as childcare, support for seniors, youth empowerment and engagement, programs that increase community inclusion and belonging, and transportation innovation
✅Public Health, such as programs addressing food insecurity, mental health, behavioral health, substance use disorder, intimate partner violence, health equity, and maternal health
✅Supporting the Arts, such as expanding access to cultural enrichment, using the arts to build bridges and make connections, placemaking, and providing community arts programming
