On Tuesday, Photo 1 class went to the studio to learn how to take photos manipulating studio lighting.

When first entering the studio, there were many pieces of expensive equipment that the class had to learn about. The class was told to have one volunteer to start so the teacher could demonstrate how to properly use this equipment to the class. Above pictured, is Santana posing with a light background. When shooting with darker hair it is important to make sure the background is light to contrast the dark features. This creates an overall better photo.

As the class experimented with light and color, Professor Tim Jacobsen displayed the importance of light and how each style of light can work in an artist’s favor. When Santana, the first model, was sitting on the stool being photographed by the class, both lights were shining. Above pictured, is Sarah who has a lighter complexion and hair color. The class was told to create shadows by only turning on one light behind her and leaving the others dark. This created an angelic tone and new way to capture the model.

Professor Jacobsen then showed to the class how it would be possible to capture a moving photograph. The lights were all turned off as he demonstrated the correct camera settings to create a steady image of a moving action. This was very educational to the class as they were enlightened by how simple yet complex this strategy is to perform.

While learning exciting new concepts, the class also had a blast. Santana pictured above, giggles as her photos were being taken. Professor Jacobsen always brings a fun side out to every lesson!

Model Maggie was timid to approach being the object of these photos. As she shyly walked up to the sitting area, other students were quick to encourage her and tell her she would do an amazing job as their newest model.

Once Maggie warmed up to the challenge she was captured beautifully by the students. The backlight created another beautiful angelic glow on his paler skin. Overall, the students had fun learning and taking photos of their peers. This was a wonderful experience and improved photo skills as well as confidence!
