Here are 5 reasons a DMX splitter is worth using in your lighting setup.

• Lets you go beyond 32 devices: You’re only supposed to daisy-chain up to 32 DMX devices on one line. A splitter lets you safely and reliably run many more fixtures by splitting the signal into separate branches.
• Protects your gear: Splitters with optical isolation help stop surges or faults from traveling back and damaging your lighting console or other expensive equipment.
• Boosts weak signals: It acts as a signal repeater. If you are running long cable lengths (over 300 feet), the splitter regenerates the digital data to ensure the lights at the end of the line don’t “stutter” or flicker.
• Allows cleaner wiring: Instead of one long daisy chain, you can send separate lines to different parts of the room.
• Simplifies troubleshooting: If one cable in a daisy chain fails, every light after it dies. With a splitter, a failure on one branch won’t affect the others, making it much faster to find the “bad egg” during a show.

𝟯-𝗽𝗶𝗻 𝘃𝘀 𝟱-𝗽𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗠𝗫: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲?

Both are used to control lighting, but here’s the simple version: 5-pin is the official DMX standard, while 3-pin is the more common option.

𝗪𝗵𝘆?

One reason 5-pin was adopted as the standard was to help avoid confusion with standard 3-pin audio connections. But when it comes to actual lighting control, 3-pin is a more budget-friendly choice without giving up any functionality in most lighting applications.
Quick breakdown:
• 3-pin DMX = ground, data -, and data +
• 5-pin DMX = the same three, plus two extra pins for additional data
• In most real-world lighting systems, those extra pins are never used. That’s why 5-pin to 3-pin adapters (turnarounds) work.

So while 5-pin may be the official standard, 3-pin is extremely common for a reason: it gets the job done without added cost or complexity.
