Pathways
A nonprofit that provides life skills and career guidance to young people who grow up in orphanages.
Young adults who grow up in orphanages face a path to adulthood that can be described as shorter, steeper, and more hazardous compared with the extended transitions that most young people experience as they become independent. Many of us have the opportunity to live with our parents while we finish our education, complete our schooling, and find our first job. Some individuals stay at home until t

Building dreams takes community. The young people mentored by Pathways are looking for belonging. They are also looking for the opportunity to give back and transform the world around them. We shared with you about Aarti and her dream to see smiles on children’s faces. Aarti goes to one of the most difficult places in Mumbai to spread joy, then she comes back to the Pathways community to find encouragement. For many of our young people Pathways is a place of belonging, a safe space to land, and some even call it “Family.”
Our team intentionally plans community building events to help this group grow and have fun together. To foster community and connections this Christmas, you can give:
An evening of fun for the entire Pathways community through a sports event, like a game of soccer, pickleball, or cricket $45
A Pathways Relationships Workshop and dinner for 25 young adults, which helps them learn how to build safe and healthy relationships with others $75
Two nights at a camp in Maharashtra where each young adult will have opportunities to learn and practice leadership and team building $56 per person

We are nearly to the end of our Match Campaign, and we want to thank each of you for your support! If you know of any friends or family who’d be interested in our work, we’d love for you to share this post with them.
December Flashback: Here’s a glimpse of what the folks at pathways have been up to! Some of our vibrant young adults volunteered and showed up to make our sessions fun and interactive at the institutional care homes. They brought joy and excitement along with them to make an impact on these little lives to whom the story of Christmas was shared. We danced, played games, made crafts and even held a puppet show on the theme of Christmas. We are truly grateful for each of our volunteers who showed up, partnered and gave generously to make this christmas possible for many such little lives!!!

A few months ago, we shared with you how Anav discovered a way to connect with the world and build a career by developing his photography skills. The Pathways team walked with Anav through every high and low of that journey and helped him to be successful. We want to provide the same level of support to 25 young people in the next year. We need your help to do that!
Pathways provides wrap-around care for each of our 25 young adults by helping them to take steps forward in healing from the past, understanding themselves, and discovering their unique skills and talents. Check out the image for some items on our wish list that you could provide to make that happen.
Here’s something another special thing we do: Our journey with many of the young adults begins while they are still in the residential home. We build relationships and capacity before they are out on their own by traveling to the residential homes and providing life skills classes. This is an important first step in building independence and in developing a connection to Pathways. You can sponsor a whole class for 15 young people living in an orphanage for $70.

This Christmas, your financial partnership will help us make dreams come true for young people striving to meet their education goals in 2026. Every dollar will be matched, up to $19,000!
Many of our young people complete their 10th and 12th grade exams through India’s National Open School. The cost for one young adult to complete 10th or 12th grade is $40.
In India, bachelor’s degrees are completed in 3 years. A gift of $300 will cover the fees for a young person to complete one year of studies in their bachelor’s program.
Our young people need a lot of support and encouragement as they work toward their educational goals. Many have missed foundational years of studying and require extra support. Providing individual follow-ups for a young person’s studies costs just $15 a month.
Use the link below to share a one-time contribution or sign up to provide monthly support for Pathways’ dream-chasing efforts. We can’t do it without you!

It was good to express things in paint that we can never express in words.” These words were shared at the end of a group session on grief and loss. The young adults had the opportunity to remember and put down losses that they carry and learn tools to calm deep emotions.

Pathways has had the joy of our alumna Uma* working as an Intern on our team. Her enthusiasm and joy have been contagious. For this season, she has organized and led our Christmas programs in two residential homes. We interviewed her and asked a few questions about the experience. Here is what she has to share with you:
How did you see joy being spread at Pathways Christmas programs?
The joy was brought by our young adults who volunteered at the outreach program. They gave their love and time to the children there, which made the most impact!
How would you describe your experience as an intern?
I had great exposure through the life skills classes, career workshops, and relationship trainings that I have supported in the residential homes and with the young adults in Mumbai. I gained experience in how to cater to the young adults by making the sessions fun and interactive.
How has your experience as a Pathways Alumna helped you in your role as an intern?
Over the years I have built relationships with the Pathways team and young adults which made it easier to connect, and I have personal experience which can help me mentor the young people.
What do you think is the best part about Pathways?
The best part of Pathways is the people: the team and the young adults! I have learned so much from other people’s lives and stories.
What’s next on the horizon for you?
I am going back to school to complete my masters in social work, and am helping to begin a new organization that will work with women and children in need of care and protection.
Thank you for all you have given to support Uma and our other young people who are spreading joy this Christmas! Your gifts are multiplying in the lives of our young adults.
*Usually, we change the names in our stories for privacy and safety. But Uma has given us permission to share her real name and likeness with you in this video and interview.

Sahas took a day off from work to meet up with Avesh, a Pathways staff member who focuses on helping our young adults find jobs, get hired, stay hired, and navigate important career decisions.
As he sat down next to Avesh, Sahas opened up about his experience. “I was so upset when you got me this job. It was an admin job, which was NOT what I wanted. I wanted you to find me a photography job because that’s what I really love and care about!” Sahas had almost given up soon after landing the job. “But I prayed, and I stayed. I talked to a mentor and he encouraged me to give my best. I did give my best, and I began liking the job. I talked to the design team at the company about my skills in photography and asked them how to get a role within the company in photography. They gave me helpful guidance. I did what they suggested. Now, I have been hired as a photographer and I am so thankful. I get to do what I really enjoy and it’s because of you and the Pathways team.”
Each day, Sahas gets to do what he loves: traveling around to bake houses and coffee shops and capturing the mouthwatering treats his company produces. He often has to work long, grueling hours, but he enjoys the people he gets to meet and the relationships he builds along the way.
We are so proud of Sahas! We admire the way he listened, persevered, and built relationships. Sahas has turned a difficult work situation into a joy-filled one.
Join the Pathways team this next year in walking alongside young adults transitioning out of institutional care and helping them navigate the journey of finding employment and building a career. Together we can spread Joy!

This walk is a global awareness event that aims to end human trafficking. The nonprofit A21 organizes the event globally, and The Movement India brought it to India and the city of Mumbai. Our young adults woke up super early, gave up their day off to raise awareness that slavery still exists and to stand against it. We are super proud of them!
