🏁🏎️STUBBY'S RACE WEEKEND WEATHER UPDATE
5/21/26 @ 2:30pm - Rainy, stormy, and possibly a shortened race on Sunday. This Indianapolis 500 Race Weekend forecast is sponsored by Tint King.
As of Thursday afternoon, May 21, this is very much a “keep checking back” forecast. The NWS Indianapolis discussion says rain/storm timing is still tied to smaller disturbances that models struggle to pin down this far out, so this forecast can — and likely will — change. So, don't get married to it, just yet!
🏎️🎸🎤Friday — Miller Lite Carb Day:
Morning looks mainly cloudy with rain not as widespread early. By afternoon, showers become more likely, and a thunderstorm is possible after about 2 p.m. Friday evening into Friday night currently looks like the wettest window of the weekend — possibly a washout at times. High near 71.
🔸 Morning: Mostly cloudy; lower rain chance early.
🔸 Afternoon: Showers become more likely, especially mid-to-late afternoon.
🔸 Evening: Best chance for steadier rain and a few storms.
🔸 Dry windows: Most likely earlier in the day.
🎉Saturday — Lucas Oil 500 Festival Parade:
Morning still carries a shower chance, especially earlier in the day. The better news: guidance shows a relative lull from mid-morning Saturday into Saturday night. That does not mean guaranteed dry, but the parade window looks more workable than Friday evening. Mostly cloudy, high near 77, with west-southwest winds and gusts near 20 mph.
🔸 Morning: Some shower risk, especially early.
🔸 Afternoon: Better chance for dry breaks; still mostly cloudy.
🔸 Evening: Lower rain chance compared to Friday night.
🔸 Dry windows: Mid-morning through afternoon looks most favorable.
🏁🏎️🏆Sunday — 110th Indianapolis 500:
Race Day is the big question mark. Right now, Sunday morning may start with more dry time than earlier forecasts suggested. The higher rain/storm chance appears to build mainly after 2 p.m., with a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms. High near 80.
With the green flag scheduled for 12:45pm, here’s how things are currently lining up based on the latest forecast guidance, ensemble trends, and NWS discussions:
🔸 12:00pm – 1:00pm: Mostly cloudy and humid, but likely still mainly dry. A stray shower can’t be ruled out, but this currently looks like one of the better windows of the day.
🔸 1:00pm – 2:00pm: Race likely gets underway under mostly dry conditions. Clouds continue building with increasing atmospheric instability.
🔸 2:00pm – 3:00pm: Shower chances begin increasing. This is the point where radar will likely start getting watched closely around the Speedway and west/southwest of Indianapolis.
🔸 3:00pm – 4:00pm: This currently appears to be the most concerning weather window for the race. Scattered showers and thunderstorms become more likely, and any lightning within the safety radius would stop race activity.
🔸 4:00pm – 5:00pm: Additional scattered showers and storms remain possible, though this may depend heavily on where earlier storms develop and move.
For track drying, yes — there could be breaks Sunday, especially if the morning stays mostly dry or showers are scattered rather than steady. But if storms pop after the start, each shower resets the clock. This does not look like a clean “all-day rain” signal right now, but it also isn’t a green-flag-and-forget-it forecast.
Bottom line: Friday evening looks the soggiest. Saturday looks manageable. Sunday is a watch-it-close forecast with possible dry windows, but afternoon showers/storms could absolutely mess with race timing.
I'll keep updating you as models will surely change. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
~ Stubby Out!

Updated schedule for the Carb Night Classic at Lucas Oil Raceway. Moving up to Thursday evening.
Due to weather rolling through Indianapolis, we’ve had to make a few adjustments to the weekend schedule. Sadly, we won’t be racing Friday night, but a little rain won’t stop us from going racing! ☔️🏁

[UPDATE] ECR driver Alexander Rossi underwent successful outpatient procedures this evening to repair minor injuries to a finger on his left hand and his right ankle. He sustained the injuries earlier today during an on-track incident while practicing for the Indianapolis 500. Rossi is in good spirits and has no additional injuries.
Rossi’s recovery will be under the care of INDYCAR Medical Director Dr. Julia Vaizer and the INDYCAR medical team. His progress will continue to be evaluated with the full intent of participating in final practice on Friday, May 22 and the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 24.
The No. 20 Java House Chevrolet crew will prepare a backup car and return to the track for final practice on Friday, May 22.
Additional updates will be provided when available.
Qualifying day did not go as well as it normally does with the rainout Saturday and plans changed so drivers didn’t go through victory circle after quali like they normally do…but we still found a way. Just didn’t get as many as normal. There’s even an unexpected, surprise interview in there from someone who normally doesn’t talk but still has a lot to say! 😉
