Addressing a Dangerous Pilot - PilotWorkshops 01/25/2023

Addressing a Dangerous Pilot - PilotWorkshops Bob: “If they are endangering others, you can take action. The Federal Aviation Regulations are written in blood, which means that while we certainly honor our freedoms in this country, common sense does not always prevail and regulations must be put in place. Aerobatic maneuvers are described in ...

Drag on a Power-Off 180 - PilotWorkshops 01/12/2023

Drag on a Power-Off 180 - PilotWorkshops Jeff: “I’m assuming you’re putting in full nose-up trim to easily maintain a speed near best glide and full coarse pitch on the prop to maximize glide range. That’s fine if you’re traveling toward a forced landing area, but it’s probably unnecessary if you’re already in position for a ...

Fuel Gauge Accuracy - PilotWorkshops 01/04/2023

Fuel Gauge Accuracy - PilotWorkshops Ryan: “Common sense would suggest this isn’t true, and, in fact, it isn’t. FAR 91.205 says that a fuel gauge indicating the quantity of fuel in each tank is required equipment. If the tanks are half full, a gauge that reads empty is not doing its FAR 91.205 mandated job. So where did this idea...

Avoiding "Flap Sink" - PilotWorkshops 12/24/2022

Avoiding "Flap Sink" - PilotWorkshops Catherine “As an FAA examiner, I know exactly what you’re describing as I regularly experience the same sensation on practical exams. The good news is that we can smooth out your technique, so those accelerations won’t happen. But first, let’s explore why you’re accelerating downward in th...

Benefits of a Spot Landing Contest - PilotWorkshops 12/11/2022

Benefits of a Spot Landing Contest - PilotWorkshops Tom: “It’s fun to be the ace of the base and win a spot-landing contest. But being good at accuracy landings has benefits far beyond winning the adoration of your fellow fliers. To be consistently good at spot landings you must master three skills: airspeed control, glide path control, and the t...

Airplane IPC vs. Simulator Practice - PilotWorkshops 12/07/2022

Airplane IPC vs. Simulator Practice - PilotWorkshops Doug: “First off, I commend you for recognizing the value of regular, periodic instrument training, irrespective of your currency or proficiency. I find it odd that the FAA does not mandate recurrent training for all instrument-rated pilots flying under Part 91. They do for pilots who fly for the ...

Anticipating ATC Cancellation Instructions - PilotWorkshops 11/17/2022

Anticipating ATC Cancellation Instructions - PilotWorkshops Bruce: “Situations like this are another reason to annotate charts, especially if you use ForeFlight or a similar EFB. At non-towered airports, controllers often announce the phone number to call or the frequency to use to cancel IFR at the most inconvenient time—typically near the final approac...
