What is a frostquake? A frostquake or Cryoseism occurs when water in the soil rapidly freezes and expands as the top soil horriozons freeze. This rapid expansion causes the ground to crack or pop. This can sound like loud pops/booms & can even briefly shake the ground. Frost quakes (Cryoseisms) typically don't cause and damage nor are they related to seismic activity, but they can rattle windows.
