Dock Preservation

As of January 2004, there was a change in the chemical preservatives used for pressure-treated lumber available for residential use in the United States.
Many of your docks are old enough to still have the old CCA treated pilings. Below are a few things to consider related to maintaining your docks whether they are constructed with the old CCA lumber or the new treatment process(ACQ).
Old pilings (CCA)

As the pilings age they will show signs of the effects of the sun and saltwater environment. This will be visible in the form of what will appear to be a fuzzy exterior above the waterline, which will begin to splinter over time if left untreated. This is a result of the pilings wicking saltwater, the sun evaporates the water leaving behind salt crystals. This process will continue if left unprotected, shortening the life of the pilings.

New Pilings (ACQ)
Docks constructed in the last 20 years are likely being supported with pilings treated with ACQ. The good news is, no arsenic. The bad news is that these are still subject to the effects of their environment and delignification, AKA: “Fuzzy Wood”. Where the older methods were lasting 20-30 years, these newer pilings will only last 12-14 years, less than a decade if unprotected. Especially in a marine environment like Florida’s.
