The chance for tropical development has increased to 20% as the remnants of Cristina linger near the eastern coast of Mexico.
If anything forms, it will have only a short window to develop and poses **no threat to Florida.**
We’ll continue to monitor, but there’s no cause for concern locally. 👍

El Niño is officially here, and it could influence hurricane season.
Current projections suggest this may become one of the strongest El Niño events on record.
For the Atlantic, that often means increased wind shear, which can make conditions less favorable for tropical development and potentially limit hurricane activity. However, El Niño is just one piece of the puzzle, and it doesn't eliminate the risk of impactful storms.

‼️Today, Colorado State University lowered its 2026 Atlantic hurricane season forecast, reducing the number of storms expected this season to 11 named storms, 5 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes.
The adjustment is not unusual, as CSU routinely updates its forecast throughout the hurricane season as atmospheric and oceanic conditions evolve.
The primary reason for the lower outlook is the increasing likelihood that El Niño will develop and strengthen in the coming months. El Niño typically increases wind shear across the Atlantic, creating a less favorable environment for tropical development.
Cooler than average sea surface temperatures across the Main Development Region of the tropical Atlantic also contributed to the forecast reduction.
As always, the Gulf Coast Weather Team emphasizes that it only takes one storm to make a season active for our community. Whether the season is forecast to be above average, near average, or below average, hurricane preparedness should remain the same.
