Today, June 17, we send birthday wishes to “Terrible” Terry Norris who turns 59 years old ... hard to believe.

Terry was a star baseball player during high school but bypassed a career on the diamond for one in the ring. He had a stellar 291-4 amateur record and won 4 Texas State Golden Gloves titles. Known for his hand and foot speed as well as the ability to throw dizzying combos, Norris' athletic ability was an uncanny attribute in the ring.

He turned professional in August 1986 and ended up winning the Jr. Middleweight title – three times. Notable opponents Terry defeated were; Quincy Taylor, John Mugabi, Sugar Ray Leonard, Donald Curry, Jorge Castro, Meldrick Taylor, Simon Brown (in their rematch), Paul Vaden, and Vincent Pettway. His final ring record was 47-9, with 31 K.O.s.

He is the brother of former WBA cruiserweight champion Orlin Norris. A source close to the Norris camp once said, "The best boxing I ever watched live was the sparring between the Norris brothers."

Terry and his wife founded his Foundation, The Final Fight to assist former pro boxers who are ill, broke and homeless. They also own World Champion Cardio Boxing, a popular workout program in North Hollywood, California. Terry was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005. Mathew Saad Muhammad would have been 72 today but he is perpetually 59 as he died May 25, 2014 from complications of ALS and a stroke. We had some great times together. Thinking of you today and missing you terribly my friend.

The former welterweight world champion was inducted into the IBHOF in 2003. He was a great fighter during a great era, and was a great trainer and even greater human being. I miss you my friend.

Fred Lampson, former boxing commissioner of Kentucky, was born on this day (June 14, 1916). The last time I saw Fred was in the late 90s when he came to visit in Florida. Fred passed away in March 2007, a couple of months before his 91st birthday. We shared a lot of great times and memories. Thinking of you old friend. Happy heavenly birthday. Rest in peace.
