Fort Collins was a military post charged with protecting the Cherokee trail and guarding the Overland Stage Line. The 9th Kansas Cavalry at Fort Laramie was sent to the area they dubbed "Camp Collins" in honor of a favorite commander Lt. Col. William O. Collins on July 22, 1862.

Fort Collins is located at about 7,500 feet above sea level. Some people may experience symptoms of altitude sickness but there are some simple precautions such as rest for 24 hours before strenuous activity, eating carbs, drinking plenty of water, and limiting salt intake.
