WTF Friday - It's always fun when you do a simple oil pan reseal on a Land Rover and find a piece that clearly doesn't belong. This client had the timing chain and tensioner replaced by the dealer under warranty. It looks like the chain tensioner failed and they decided not to bother finding the pieces before buttoning it up and sending it.

⚠️🔧 BMW B58 Oil Pump Failures — What Owners Need to Know
We’ve been seeing an increasing number of BMW B58 engines affected by oil pump failures, primarily in 2015–2020 Gen 1 and some early 2021 Gen 2 vehicles.
🔍 Root Cause:
The failure typically originates from a plastic ring/carrier inside the oil pump housing that is moves to control amount of oil being output. This component is made from a very brittle plastic that is prone to cracking, especially in colder climates, which can lead to oil pressure instability.
💥 Why This Is Serious:
A compromised oil pump can cause:
❌ Loss of oil pressure
❌ Dangerously high or erratic oil pressure
❌ Spun or seized bearings
❌ Complete engine failure
🚩 Common Symptoms:
• Whining or humming noise (often on cold starts)
• iDrive unable to read oil level
• Low oil pressure warnings
• Abnormally high oil pressure readings (often 47+ PSI at idle)
🛠️ The Fix:
BMW updated the oil pump design to an all-metal version around July 2020, which addresses the weak point found in earlier pumps. Replacing the original pump with the updated version is highly recommended given the potential for serous engine damage if the failure is not caught and fixed very quickly.
✅ Preventative Measures:
• Pay close attention to cold-start noises
• Monitor oil pressure readings
• Ensure oil level readings function properly
• Use manufacturer-recommended oil only — thicker oils can increase stress on the plastic components and accelerate or even cause the failure
Early diagnosis is critical. If you own a B58-powered BMW and notice any of these symptoms, don’t ignore them — catching this issue early can save the engine.
