At Bal Seal Engineering, we make custom seals, springs, and electrical contacts that improve the performance and reliability of critical equipment used everywhere – from deep sea to deep space. Although they’re often measured in millimeters, our proven, precise products have a profound impact. They make active medical implantables smaller and more functional, simplify orthopedic implant and instrument design for reduced patient risk, improve the accuracy of diagnostic and analytical equipment used in disease testing and drug development, and even protect spacecraft – like NASA’s Curiosity Rover – in conditions that are literally out of this world. How much holding force is just enough?
That was the challenge Exactech faced with its award-winning Truliant® knee replacement system. The topper and shim components needed to stay securely together during surgical trialing, but separate easily when the surgeon wanted them to. Through design, prototyping, and testing with our Bal Spring, they found the sweet spot: enough force to hold, not enough to hinder.
Bonus: a confidence-inspiring haptic "click" when the parts correctly mated.

Bal Seal Engineering General Manager Eric Yarbrough and a few other good sports took turns in the dunk tank at our Colorado Springs facility, all to help the local Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado.The event collected over 100 boxes of breakfast items, and an anonymous employee donated $500 to the cause.

This announcement in Mass Device about Bluewind Medical's receipt of FDA 510(k) clearance for its Revi Extend tibial neuromodulation system underscores the growing importance of implant longevity as a design driver. As device life expectations increase to 15+ years, so will the need for small, stable electrical interfaces that can go the distance.

In medical device design, confidence comes from evidence. Bal Seal Engineering’s SP400HT PTFE sealing material meets ISO 10993-5 and USP Plastic Class VI biocompatibility requirements, as confirmed by independent medical device testing laboratory NAMSA. That assurance can make one critical design decision a little less challenging.
