The former Amigo Market property on the corner of Highland Avenue and Medical Center Drive in the Delmann Heights neighborhood will undergo improvements to become a "Higher Ground" dispensary, offering affordable, high-quality products.
Although this will be a new site for the retail store, the decision to move stems from the transfer of ownership and relocation of an existing license. This license was originally issued to PTRE Management for 225 E. Airport Drive on July 19, 2022, but the anticipated cannabis store never opened for business.
On February 21, 2019, the Mayor and City Council approved 16 permits for commercial cannabis businesses, covering a range of license types throughout the city. Although the majority of the sanctioned cannabis retail stores are located on the city's southside, the new "Higher Ground" store will be the first in this area.
Councilmembers Figueroa, Knaus, Sanchez, and Shorett supported the proposal, while Councilmembers Flores, who represents the sixth ward where the store will be located, Ibarra, and Ortiz were against it.
A city report released in 2022 revealed that the commercial cannabis regulatory program had generated more than $4.3 million in cannabis tax revenue and over $150,000 from regulatory and application fees since June 2021.
