When it comes to books, manuals, learning materials, catalogs, user guides and marketing materials, we still opt for printed ink on paper in our hands over electronic screens. What we have learned from our nation-wide customer base may surprise you:
1. Tangible reading experience: Printed products provide a tactile experience that many people find engaging. They can physically flip through pages, underline or highlight text, and write notes in the margins. These actions help with comprehension, memory, and overall reading experience.
2. Reduced eye strain: Reading from printed products can be easier on the eyes compared to reading from electronic devices such as tablets or e-readers. The absence of backlighting and glare from screens can minimize eye strain, making it more comfortable to read for extended periods.
3. Enhanced concentration and focus: Printed products are generally free from distractions like notifications, pop-ups, or internet access, which are often present in electronic devices. This can help students concentrate better and stay focused on the material they are studying.
4. Improved reading comprehension: Research suggests that reading printed pages promotes better reading comprehension compared to reading on screens. The physical presence of pages and the ability to flip back and forth aids in understandin the context, locating information, and making connections within the text.
5. Accessible without technology: Print does not require electricity, internet connectivity, or specific devices. This makes them readily accessible to students, regardless of their location or access to technology. Additionally, printed books do not have compatibility issues with different file formats or software versions.
6. Visual appeal and aesthetics: We appreciate the aesthetic value of printed books, such as the cover design, typography, and illustrations. The physical presence of a bookshelf filled with colorful spines can also create a visually pleasing learning environment.
7. Retention and recall: Some studies suggest that reading from printed materials enhances long-term retention and recall of information. The combination of physical touch, visual cues, and spatial memory helps students form stronger associations with the content, making it easier to remember and retrieve information.
It's worth noting that while printed books have these advantages, digital resources also offer their own benefits, such as portability, searchability, and interactive features. The choice between printed and digital books ultimately depends on personal preferences, the nature of the material, and the specific learning context.
