Sargassum acts like a floating habitat in the Gulf, providing shelter, food, and protection for countless species—from tiny shrimp and crabs to juvenile fish that use it as a safe place to grow.

This weekend I spent a few minutes digging through some of it and was amazed (again) by how much life is packed into something most people walk right past.

One of my favorite parts about living on the Gulf Coast is learning what’s happening beyond the white sand and blue water.
