Punch Out Pitching
Personalized remote and/or in person pitching coaching for any developing baseball player.
Who is your favorite pitcher to watch? It’s deGrom for me!
ACCELERATE LATE
You can’t try to throw before your front foot lands. This video shows Chris Archer punching out a hitter in spring training, but you can see how late his arm accelerates!
By waiting to throw until your front foot lands, you’re allowing all of the energy to be transferred to your upper body and then into your arm!

LEAD WITH THE HIP
Something that helped me out a lot was beginning to move down the mound with my left pocket being shown to the catcher’s glove pocket.
A lot of young pitchers can use this little trick to get some more power out of their legs!
Notice how Berrios begins to move down the mound and his butt is out in front of him! Give it a try!

2021 GERRIT COLE
98 MPH FB 🔥
88 MPH SL 🤢
Even a fastball up and away can be paired with a slider down! Guarding against 98 MPH will make any breaking pitch harder to hit.
You don’t have to throw 98 to get swings and misses like that, however. Try to use the last pitch speed and location to determine where to throw your next pitch!

KIRBY YATES
I’ve been really into taking video from the front view, and I love this clip of Kirby Yates. He’s got one of the best splitters in the game, and his mechanics don’t change a bit!
I’ve posted other clips of his fastball before, but the mechanics here are the same!
You can see that he is deceptive because the ball is never in the view of the hitter before release. The front side is tight and he keeps his eyes level!
All of these things help him throw strikes and punch out hitters! 🔥

OHTANI 2019
What stands out to you in this clip of Ohtani pitching in a 2019 game? Would you make any mechanical adjustments if you were him and had to rehab a Tommy John Surgery? I wouldn’t..
Let me know in the comments!

ALWAYS MOVE FORWARD
This is a concept that doesn’t get talked about enough, in my opinion. When you are on the mound, you should ALWAYS be moving towards home plate during your leg kick.
It is a bonus if your butt can stay out in front of you for as long as Kopech’s does!
It’s going to take time to feel like you’re not “falling” down the mound... but when you’re able to control your body with the added energy that the slope of the mound provides, you’re going to throw 🔥🔥🔥

MESSING WITH TIMING
Eovaldi has an upper 90s fastball, but is always looking to add something new to his game.
The slight hesitation disrupts the hitter’s timing and might be something you can add into your delivery!
Even when you hesitate... keep your body moving forwards!

UPGRADE YOUR CURVEBALL
I used to always struggle with my curveball being much slower than my fastball, and it was because of a lack of arm speed!
So many younger players can benefit from having the feeling of their arm going fast when they throw an offspeed pitch!
When your body and arm moves faster.... THE PITCH IS FASTER!
Your curveball will quickly become a swing and miss pitch if you can get your body moving faster in a run & gun... and then keep the same feeling in a flat ground or off the mound!

MECHANICAL CHANGES
I’ve been trying to tighten up my front side so that I don’t over-rotate before I release the ball.
The truth when you’re making any mechanical adjustment:
𝐈𝐓’𝐒 𝐃𝐈𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐔𝐋𝐓‼️
One throw can be good.. the next one could be off the backstop!
And any adjustment is going to feel weird... even professional pitchers don’t pick things up right away! Don’t stress if things aren’t perfect!
(This post was for me as much as it will be for you! I have to tell myself this all the time!)

BE DECEPTIVE!
Zack Greinke has done a great job moving the ball around the zone throughout his career, and his arsenal of pitches gives hitters a different look every time through the order. He also hides the ball!
Something that jumped out to me in this clip was how he “hides” the ball from the hitter. His arm action keeps the ball behind his body until he’s in position to deliver the pitch.
For a lot of pitchers, their arm action is much longer than what you see in Greinke. However, the pitchers that take a shorter path (not seeing the ball behind pitcher’s back) typically deceive the hitters more because the hitter can’t see the ball until it’s out of the pitchers hand!
Take some video from the front view to find out if you’re hiding the ball from the hitter!
