He began his career as a trapper and frontiersman at age 24, eventually becoming a guide for wagon trains headed west from Fort Laramie before settling in California as a gold miner.

Despite thin details on his life and adventures, he'd go on to be immortalized in 1985's The Oregon Trail video game, with his name forever appearing at the top of the high score list.
