In the garden of the Bishop of Eichstedt at the beginning of the 17th century, 21 varieties of roses grew, brought to Europe from the east through Constantinople, including Damask. During the time of the Minnesingers, there were beautiful gardens with red and white roses, with which the Minnesingers were crowned

Wildflowers were collected for wreaths and other decorations. And only rose bushes received special attention and were grown in gardens. In the paintings of the great Italian Renaissance artists we can see roses that were grown in Italian gardens of that time, most likely from Italy

The length of the peduncle of garden roses ranges from 10 to 80 cm. Rose flowers surprise with their diversity. Their sizes range from 1.8 cm to 18 cm, the number of petals can range from 5 to 128, there are up to a dozen different flower shapes, the flowers can be either single or in inflorescences from three to two hundred pieces

The efforts of breeders were aimed at creating new varieties that would combine the remontant nature of Asian roses and the frost resistance of European roses. For a long time this could not be achieved, and only at the beginning of the 19th century was it possible to overcome the uncrossability of these two groups of roses.

Most varieties of roses were obtained as a result of long-term selection through repeated repeated crossings and selection. Some varieties are forms of wild species.
