Today, on International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, we recognize the impact substance use and illegal drug trafficking have on individuals, families, and communities worldwide.

Illicit drug trafficking contributes to community violence, unsafe substances entering neighborhoods, increased overdose risk, exploitation, and barriers to public health and safety. The growing presence of fentanyl and other synthetic substances has made the drug supply increasingly unpredictable and dangerous, affecting people across all backgrounds and communities.

At the same time, substance use disorders are health conditions — not moral failures. Many individuals struggling with substance use are also navigating trauma, mental health challenges, poverty, isolation, or lack of access to care.

Addressing this issue requires both prevention and compassion:
• Expanding access to treatment and recovery support
• Increasing education and early intervention
• Supporting harm reduction and overdose prevention efforts
• Reducing stigma around asking for help
• Strengthening community resources and support systems

Healthy communities are built when people have access to safety, support, and opportunities for recovery.

📢 StepOne Service is expanding to Community Medical Center in Missoula, Montana!

We are so excited to embark on this collaboration that provides much needed Acute Withdrawal Management services to the Northern Rockies Region.

❓ What is it?

The StepOne Service™ is an inpatient, hospital-based, three-to-five-day acute withdrawal management service for adults who require medical management of withdrawal symptoms from alcohol or opioids. The self-referral service is provided in a local hospital setting in partnership with Evergreen Healthcare Partners, LLC.

✔️ Who is it for?

The StepOne Service™ is available to adults who are in the impending or early stages of acute withdrawal at the time of their voluntary admission to the hospital. The goal is to medically assist them through the withdrawal process and help navigate the transition to an appropriate level of community-based addiction treatment that can address the underlying causes of substance use disorder.

🏥 How does it work?

Around-the-clock medical care is provided by the hospital’s team and nurses who are trained on the StepOne Service™. The clinical team monitors each patient and uses protocol-specific medications to reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms during the first step of the individual’s treatment.

At StepOne Service, our patients are treated with the same dignity, respect, and quality care as every other patient in the hospital. We believe reducing the stigma around seeking help is an important part of recovery.

Our medically supervised withdrawal management program typically lasts **3–5 days**, and before discharge, we help connect patients to ongoing treatment and recovery resources to support their next steps.

Welcome, Ryan, to our Mercy Jefferson StepOne team!

📣 We are excited to announce our New Team Member, Ryan Hill: Care Coordinator, Mercy Jefferson in Festus, Missouri.

Ryan Hill is married with two kids. Originally from Belleville, Illinois, he currently resides in De Soto, Missouri, where he appreciates the small-town atmosphere and strong sense of community.

Ryan became a Peer Recovery Specialist in Northern Virginia, where he provided street outreach services throughout Washington, DC. As a Midwest native, he eventually returned home and has continued providing peer support throughout Jefferson County — whether working with treatment courts or hosting recovery-oriented events at the community center in De Soto.

In his free time, Ryan enjoys playing music and disappearing into the woods to recharge. He believes recovery has many pathways, whether abstinence-based, faith-based, or any approach that supports the individual in their journey.

Ryan is excited for this new adventure and is truly happy to be here.
