This is one of the biggest mistakes I see on insurance policies:

Replacement Cost vs. Actual Cash Value (ACV)

Sounds boring… until you have a claim.

Here’s the difference:

Replacement Cost → pays what it costs to replace something today
Actual Cash Value → pays what it’s worth after depreciation

Example:
Your roof gets hit by hail.

– Replacement Cost → insurance helps pay for a brand new roof
– ACV → you might only get a fraction of that because of age/wear

I’ve seen people think they’re covered… then get a check that doesn’t come close.

A lot of policies quietly switch roofs (and other items) to ACV.

If you’re not 100% sure what yours is, you should check.

As we head into storm season, a few quick things to keep in mind:

• Secure anything loose outside (patio furniture, grills, etc.)
• Keep vehicles under cover if possible
• Know where your shut-offs are (water/electric)
• Take a quick look at your roof and gutters
• Have a plan if power goes out

Storms are unpredictable, but being prepared makes a big difference.

Also worth knowing not all insurance policies cover storm damage the same way.
