Caregivers need care, too. So much of caregiving is about someone else-what they need, how they’re doing, what comes next. And sometimes, your own needs can get lost along the way.

At MiGen, caring for caregivers means making sure you have support and, too. That might mean help navigating benefits and caregiver programs, finding resources for your own needs, connecting with other caregivers through our support group and more. There’s no “Medicare file” you need to update over the phone. If someone calls saying your Medicare information needs to be updated and asks you to confirm your Medicare number or other personal information, hang up. Helping care for someone with Medicare? Make sure they know about this one, too.

If you or someone you care for shared a Medicare number or other information with a suspicious caller, report it to the Senior Medicare Patrol at 877-808-2468.

It’s Fall Prevention Awareness Week and the message is simple: falls are preventable.

National Council on Aging's free Falls Free CheckUp® asks 13 simple questions to help older adults assess their risk for a fall and get personalized steps for reducing it.

Take the checkup yourself, or if you're caring for someone, go through it with someone you support. It only takes a few minutes and can help identify risks that might otherwise be easy to miss.

Find Out If You're At Risk For Falling According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one-fourth of Americans aged 65+ falls each year. Answer a few quick questions to assess your risk of falling and get a personalized report to share with your health care provider.

This is what a senior center can look like: a place for joy, authenticity, and celebration.

But that’s just one part of what senior centers can offer. From social connection to Medicare counseling, housing support, help navigating care, access to benefits and resources and more, senior centers can play a meaningful role in many different parts of aging.

This National Senior Center Month, we’re celebrating the many ways senior centers support aging adults - and, as Michigan’s first LGBTQ+ senior center, what that looks like here at MiGen.

Medicare won’t call you! Scammers can be convincing and might claim to be calling from Medicare or on Medicare’s behalf. If an unexpected caller starts asking for personal information or offering products or services like those listed below, don’t give them your information. If you’re caring for someone who has Medicare, this is important information for you to know, too, so you can help keep the people in your care safe.
