Jack Riddle, a former slave reportedly aged 106 or 107, and his wife Rosie (or Josey), also a former slave, pose with members of the Ku Klux Klan in Talladega, Alabama, in late 1948. One Klansman is dressed as Santa Claus, and a radio reportedly presented to the couple by the Klan—is displayed prominently in the photograph. Historians generally view the image as a staged publicity effort intended to portray the Klan as charitable despite its long history of racial violence and intimidation.

John Rogan (1868–1905) was one of the tallest people ever recorded, reaching a height of about 8 feet 9 inches (267 cm). Born in Tennessee to parents who had been enslaved before the Civil War, he developed a condition that caused extraordinary growth and eventually left him unable to walk. He traveled using a hand-built cart, often pulled by goats or family members. Despite numerous opportunities to profit from his fame, Rogan reportedly avoided joining traveling sideshows. After his death in 1905, his family buried him beneath a layer of concrete to prevent grave robbers from exhuming his body.
