Discovering Your Spiritual Gift...This Sunday, September 27

Imagine receiving a gift from God Himself—one chosen especially for you. Not because you earned it. Not because you deserved it. But simply because you belong to His family.

Remarkably, that is exactly what happens to every follower of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit gives each believer what the Bible calls a spiritual gift. And don’t confuse it with natural talent. A spiritual gift is something more. It is a special, supernatural enabling of the Holy Spirit that equips you to serve God and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

That means you have a place in God’s plan that no one else can fill quite like you can. Your gift was never intended to sit unopened on the shelf. God gave it to you to be discovered, developed, and put to work—especially in serving the other members of His family.

But spiritual gifts raise some fascinating questions: What are the spiritual gifts? Which one has God given me? How can I discover it? How can I use it effectively? And are there dangers that come with using—or misusing—my gift?

Discover the Life You Were Meant to Live...This Sunday, September 20

It may sound a little strange, but Carolyn and I enjoy wandering through old cemeteries. There’s something fascinating about walking among those weathered stones and realizing that every name represents a story. Someone lived there. Someone loved. Someone dreamed. Someone laughed and cried and worked and worried. And then, one day, the race was over.

We especially enjoy stopping to read the inscriptions on the tombstones. Some are touching. Some are humorous. Some tell you almost nothing about the person buried beneath them. But if I could choose one inscription for my own tombstone, I think I know what it would be. They are the words of the Apostle Paul near the end of his life:

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” — II Timothy 4:7

What a way to finish!

The Bible frequently pictures the Christian life as a race. But here’s what we sometimes miss: God never intended you to run somebody else’s race. Hebrews tells us to run “the race marked out for us.” Think about that. God has a course marked out for you—a life uniquely designed around the person He created you to be, the gifts He has given you, and the opportunities He places before you.

Unfortunately, we can spend an enormous amount of energy trying to run somebody else’s race. We compare ourselves with people who seem more successful. We chase expectations God never gave us. We take detours because someone else’s path looks more exciting than ours. And then we wonder why life can become so frustrating.

That’s where the Holy Spirit comes in.

One of the most important ministries of the Holy Spirit is helping us discover and follow the course God has marked out for our lives. He guides. He prompts. He opens doors. He closes others. He uses Scripture, circumstances, prayer, and godly wisdom to help us discern the will of God.

Combat with the Unseen Realm...This Sunday, September 13

Each believer has been given a power greatly exceeding anything we possess on our own. As we continue to explore all the important things the Holy Spirit does in our lives, often unseen by us, we come to the truth that he is the one that empowers us in our battle with the devil and his forces of evil. It’s called spiritual warfare. And, without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God within each of us, we would fall victim to a ruthless enemy.

Join us this Sunday as we are reminded that there is a battle going on—and whether we realize it or not, every follower of Jesus Christ is standing in the middle of it. The Apostle Paul warns us that our real struggle is not against “flesh and blood,” but against powerful spiritual forces we cannot see. Satan is real, he is clever, and he has “schemes” designed to discourage us, deceive us, tempt us, and weaken our walk with God.

We live in a visible world, but we are engaged in an invisible war against “the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” And the good news is that God has not sent us into battle defenseless. He has given us His strength, His power, and His armor.

Fire from Heaven...This Sunday, September 6

Waiting has never been easy. It certainly wasn't for the disciples.

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He gave them one final command: "Stay in Jerusalem." Don't leave. Don't get ahead of God. Just wait. He promised that something extraordinary was coming—a power unlike anything they had ever experienced, a power that would equip ordinary men to carry the message of Christ to the ends of the earth.

But He didn't tell them how long they would have to wait.

Can you imagine those days? Every morning, they may have wondered, Will today be the day? Conversations undoubtedly filled the room. Questions lingered in the air. Some may have quietly wondered if they had misunderstood Jesus. Others may have been tempted to pack their bags and head home. Waiting has a way of testing both our patience and our faith.

Without warning, heaven broke the silence. The sound of a mighty rushing wind filled the house. Tongues of fire appeared. The Holy Spirit came just as Jesus had promised. There was no doubt. No confusion. No second-guessing. God had kept His word, and the city of Jerusalem came running to see what all the commotion was about.
