FALL HAS ARRIVED IN FALLBROOK… AND SO HAVE THE SCARECROWS! 🎃

Have you noticed Fallbrook looking a little more “fall-ish” lately? Our annual Scarecrow Days are back from 10-1 to 10-31.

But did you know this Fallbrook tradition actually started right here in 2012?

A small group of volunteers came together after getting the idea from a town that displayed handmade scarecrows throughout October. They thought it would be the perfect fit for Fallbrook, with our agricultural roots, creative community and love of all things local. And they were right!

Today, scarecrows pop up all over town at local businesses, nonprofits, schools and homes. There are even different categories for the competition, including funnies/humor, recycle, reuse and reduce.

FALLBROOK TRIVIA!

Did you know the ponds at Los Jilgueros Preserve were created by a Fallbrook avocado pioneer nearly 100 years ago?

Long before it became one of our favorite places to walk, this land was part of the Neff family homestead. Then, in 1922, Arthur Anthony purchased 20 acres and eventually expanded his ranch to about 160 acres.

Water was a constant challenge, so after a particularly wet winter in 1930, Anthony used a horse-drawn Fresno scraper to build a series of earthen dams. The ponds stored about 100 acre-feet of water and helped make his avocado operation incredibly productive.

By the 1940s, his ponds were a familiar sight from Mission Road—and just 25 acres of his avocado trees were producing 125–200 tons of avocados a year!

And here’s the really cool part: you can still see remnants of those old concrete dams and farm equipment today.

In 1990, the property became the Fallbrook Land Conservancy’s very first preserve, opening to the public on Earth Day.

So the next time you walk Los Jilgueros, remember—you’re not just walking a beautiful preserve. You’re walking through a piece of Fallbrook’s agricultural history.

Did you know the Santa Margarita River Trail has a fascinating history?

The Santa Margarita River Valley was historically traveled by the Luiseño people, and the river was named by the Portolá expedition in 1769.

In the 1880s, the California Southern Railroad ran through the valley, but repeated flooding eventually led to the route being abandoned in 1891.

Even more interesting, in the 1960s there were plans to build a dam here! Thankfully, those plans never came to fruition. In 2018, the land was acquired by The Wildlands Conservancy and preserved for everyone to enjoy.

Today, we have miles of beautiful trails right here in our own backyard.

Fallbrook really is a special place!

Today, we pause to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11th and the countless families, first responders, military members, and everyday Americans whose lives were forever changed.

We remember the courage of those who ran toward danger to help others. We remember the kindness and unity that brought our country together in the days that followed.

May we never forget the lives lost, the heroes who served, and the importance of standing together.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
