For private foundations, governance is often treated as back-office box-checking—until the moment it becomes the only thing that matters. A leadership transition, a sudden influx of assets, a family disagreement over strategy: these are the moments when strong governance either steadies a foundation or exposes how little structure was ever in place.
Our National Philanthropy Executive Gillian Howell and Vice President of Philanthropic Advisory Services Miki Akimoto recently sat down to discuss governance and best practices.

"According to the 2026 Study of the Philanthropic Conversation, conducted by The Philanthropic Initiative (TPI), 75% of high-net-worth (HNW) donors are more likely to hire a financial advisor with charitable planning expertise, up significantly from 40% in 2018 when TPI last conducted the study. In the same vein, 78% of HNW donors now use at least one structured giving vehicle (donor-advised fund, charitable trust, private foundation, or giving circle), up from 43% in 2018. (TPI’s 2026 research surveyed 103 HNW individuals with at least $5 million in investible assets, and 300 professional financial advisors.)
Yet here’s a dilemma: The same study shows that fewer than half of HNW clients—just 49%—consider their advisor very knowledgeable about charitable giving vehicles. That gap matters. It represents a massively missed opportunity for advisors to engage with their clients in a new way, one that often involves meaningful conversations about personal values, interests and charitable aspirations."
