The Masterson Method, Integrated Equine Performance Bodywork
Improving performance, communication and relationship with your horse. The Masterson Method® is an integrated, multi-modality method of equine massage.
It is a unique, interactive method of equine massage in which you learn to recognize and use the responses of the horse to your touch to find and release accumulated tension in key junctions of the body that most affect performance. In contrast to most traditional modalities, it enables the horse to actively participate in the process of releasing tension. It is something you do with the horse, ra
Why Wednesday ~ My horse feels tight through his topline and struggles to stay supple in collected work. What could be contributing to it?
Answer: When a horse begins showing resistance in the canter, difficulty with collection, or stiffness through the back, it's important to first rule out common causes such as saddle fit, previous injuries, hoof or limb compensation patterns, and dental concerns.
Once those factors have been addressed, consider looking beyond the visible topline and into the deeper structures that support movement, specifically the psoas muscle group.
The psoas and iliopsoas muscles play a key role in stabilizing the lumbar spine and pelvis while helping flex the hip and transfer power from the hindquarters through the body. Because these muscles connect the underside of the lumbar region to the pelvis and hind legs, tension here can significantly affect both movement and comfort.
Since tension in the hindquarters and back is closely connected, releasing restrictions in the hind end can often help improve overall freedom of movement. One technique we can use in this area is the Psoas Point, one of the Masterson Method® Hind End Release points.
Using the Search–Response–Stay–Release (SRSR) process in the lumbar area (particularly when the horse is resting a hind leg) can encourage a profound release of tension. In this video, Jim demonstrates the technique and shows the horse's response as tension begins to melt away.

Why Wednesday ~ My horse tends to have tension in the shoulders, especially around the withers, and is very sensitive and reactive to touch. Is there a technique that could help release tension in this area?
Answer: The Withers Wiggle Release is a simple technique that can help a horse release tension in the muscles beneath the scapula and around the thoracic vertebrae.
Using the lightest touch (think egg-yolk pressure), gently wiggle the withers back and forth while observing your horse for responses such as blinking, licking, chewing, softening, or a head shake. The key is to work so lightly that your horse does not feel the need to brace against the movement.
Patience is essential. Rather than increasing pressure, stay soft and allow your horse time to process and release. These gentle micro-movements can help release tension in an area that is otherwise difficult to access.
Watch Jim demonstrate the Withers Wiggle Release and see how a light touch can make a big difference.

Talking about horses, live!
Sometimes the fastest way to help a horse isn't to go directly to the problem.
One of The Masterson Method's core principles is to find first where it's easier for the horse. By working in the areas where the horse finds it easier to let go, it then becomes easier to help them release tension in the more restricted areas, which often begin to soften on their own.
That's why, when we do The Masterson Method, we work with the horse, not to the horse. That's where real change begins.

What does it really mean to let the horse participate in the process?
In this clip from last year's conversation, Jim Masterson and Patrick King discuss one of the core principles behind the Masterson Method®: using light touch, observing subtle responses, and allowing the horse's nervous system to guide the release.
As Jim explains, it's not about doing something to the horse; it's about creating the space for the horse to respond and feel safe enough to let go of tension.
As we look forward to another conversation with Jim and Patrick, we're sharing this excerpt from last year's Facebook Live event.

Why Wednesday ~ My horse seems very uncomfortable when I try to do the Head Down Technique. Can you share any tips on doing this technique with a poll-sensitive horse?
Answer: The Head Down Technique helps horses release tension through the poll and improve softness and mobility in this area. As the horse relaxes, you can gently work the tissues behind the poll and create subtle movement through the poll and atlas joint with a soft, rhythmic motion.
The goal is never to pull or hold the head down. Instead, offer the invitation and allow the horse to find a position that feels comfortable.
A few helpful tips:
• Ask softly by just putting your hand over the area, and wait. By doing this, you are inviting the horse to lower their head, allowing it to choose the level that feels comfortable.
• Follow the horse if they lift the head. If the head comes up, simply stay connected with light contact and offer the invitation again. Avoid trying to prevent the movement.
• Allow them to stay in their comfort zone. When the horse settles into a lower position, give them time there. Asking for more can sometimes create resistance instead of relaxation.
• Keep your touch soft. Use the pads of your fingers with a gentle, flowing motion behind the poll to encourage release and mobility.
• Experiment with a slight bend. Bringing the head just a little off center can often help the horse soften and let go of tension more easily.
• Pay attention to your horse's responses. Watch for signs that your horse is processing or needs a pause. Working with the horse, rather than on the horse, is key.
Safety Tip: When your horse’s head is lowered, position your own head to the side rather than directly underneath. This helps keep you safe if they suddenly lift their head in response to a sound or movement.

Have you ever wondered if a horse can still carry tension from something that happened years ago?
This article from Jim Masterson explains how horses can hold onto stress and protective patterns in the body long after an incident has passed, and how gentle, responsive bodywork can help them release it.
It’s a fascinating reminder of how much horses communicate through subtle body language, and how important it is to listen.
