Most Deer Aren’t Lost Because of Bad Tracking. They’re Lost Because of Bad Shots… there we said it!

This is uncomfortable, but it’s true. When a deer isn’t recovered, the blame almost always goes to tracking. Not enough blood. Bad sign. Too much rain. Wrong direction. But most lost deer aren’t lost on the ground. They’re lost at the moment the trigger is pulled.

Rushed shots. Marginal angles. Long distances taken because the deer might not come closer. Moving animals shot because patience ran out. All legal. All common. And all avoidable.

Tracking can only work with what it’s given. A poor hit doesn’t magically turn ethical because someone tried hard afterward. Effort after the shot doesn’t erase the decision before it.

Good hunters aren’t defined by how well they track. They’re defined by how disciplined they are when the moment finally comes. Knowing when not to shoot is just as important as knowing where to aim.

Technology can help find deer. Dogs can help. Drones can help. None of them fix judgment. The most ethical recovery tool is still patience and shot selection.

This isn’t about shaming mistakes. Everyone learns. But pretending most losses are tracking failures avoids the harder conversation about restraint.

Be proud of the shots you don’t take. That’s where real ethics start.

What are your thoughts?

We ask that all gun owners put this on their wall. The Supreme Court of the United States has affirmed that the right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental right of the individual . If you believe in the 2nd Amendment, and you are not afraid to show it, re-post this!!! ... I hope to see this re-posted by a lot by my friends.
