Helping Evanston's urban forest thrive and grow The group is led by certified TreeKeepers and is affiliated with Openlands (openlands.org/treekeepers).
We're a group of neighbors who came together in August 2012 with the goal of keeping Evanston's urban forest healthy and growing. We organize work days, public programs, tree walks, and other activities to help establish young trees, raise awareness of the importance of trees, and promote best practices in tree care among residents, businesses, and other organizations. The thinner tree was cut years ago and the big one has been holding and feeding it since then. They "wake up" together in the spring and "go to sleep" together in the autumn.
Inosculation is a natural phenomenon in which parts of two different trees, commonly but not exclusively the same species, grow together, self grafting and sharing nutrients.
The term emanates from latin- ōsculārī, to kiss.

Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor)
Bicolor refers to the leaves being dark in color on top, and silvery light on the bottom. Native to to river flood plains in the Chicago area, this species can tolerate drought, clay soils, and flooding - a great shade tree for our region.
As keystone plants, they support over 400 species of caterpillars, which makes them a very important influence in our local, native environment. Oak trees are critical for birds when they are rearing their young in the spring. Caterpillars make up a significant percentage of of baby birds' diets, even the for ones we consider seed-eaters.
While white oaks aren't known for their fall color, they are sporting a wonderful golden mantle this Fall. The weather and moisture combinations affect the color display differently every year.

US cavalrymen pose in front of a tree known as the "Giant Grizzly" in the early 1900’s. The Grizzly Giant is a giant sequoia, the largest in the Mariposa Grove, located in Yosemite National Park. The tree still stands and looks almost the same today. Instagram.com/bigtreehunters
