Bradford Pears.
While their bright white blooms in early spring might look nice, they come with a laundry list of problems for our local ecosystems and properties. We've laid out the biggest dangers and curated a list of beautiful, native alternatives that thrive in the Greater Augusta area and the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA).

Common landscaping staples seen in the CSRA are often invasive species escaping into local forests and outcompeting native Georgia wildlife. Fortunately, having a beautiful yard and supporting the local ecosystem can go hand-in-hand.

Converting even a small section of your conventional lawn into a Native Habitat Patch can make a world of difference.

Why make the switch?
β€’ Less Work for You: Say goodbye to high-maintenance tasks like constant mowing and chemical treatments.
β€’ More Life for Your Yard: Attract a vibrant array of pollinators like butterflies and bees, plus birds and other small wildlife. πŸ¦‹πŸπŸ¦
β€’ Healthier Ecosystem: Native plants require less water and provide essential food and shelter, creating a balanced, thriving environment right outside your door.

Ready to get started?
It’s easier than you think! Just choose a corner of your yard and replace the grass with native wildflowers, grasses, and shrubs. Watch as your little patch becomes a buzzing hub of life!

Check out the graphic below for a side-by-side comparison and see the transformation for yourself! πŸ‘‡

Cold nights are on the way, friends! πŸ₯Ά Here are a few quick reminders to help your plants weather the chill:

❄️ Cover up: Use frost cloths, sheets, or blankets (not plastic!) to protect tender plants overnight.
🌱 Water well: Moist soil holds heat better than dry β€” give your plants a good drink before the freeze.
🏑 Bring it in: Move potted or delicate plants indoors or into a sheltered.
β˜€οΈ Uncover in the morning: Let them breathe and soak up the sun once temps rise above freezing.

Stay warm out there, and let’s keep those greens growing strong! πŸ’š
