Beautiful day at the Sequoia Park Zoo!

Today (Friday, June 21st) is the last day of our Day Programs second quarter, which means next week is Activities Week! See the schedule here, along with fun theme days everyone can participate in.

Clients and staff celebrated the summer solstice with a charcuterie party!
Charcuterie, (an array of snacks often including cheese, meats, and crackers), can be a creative way to bring people together and inspire new ideas. They can be customized for any occasion and can include a variety of foods beyond the traditional meats and cheeses, including Brain healthy foods like vegetables, nuts and fruits.

Making Headway Center wishes everyone a happy Juneteenth!
Juneteenth commemorates the day on June 19, 1865 when a Union general read orders in Galveston, Texas stating all enslaved people in the state were free according to federal law. Juneteenth was designated a federal holiday in 2021.

Day Program volunteers harvested garlic at the Open Door Community Health & Wellness Garden today!
Garlic promotes brain health because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is effective against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia!

Seaweed may have brain health benefits. It contains nutrients and compounds that can help protect the brain from stress and inflammation, and may even improve mental health!

We love volunteering at Food for People! You can tell by the smiles our group had fun sorting apples this week.
Food for People, the Food Bank for Humboldt County, is working to eliminate hunger and improve the health and well-being of our community through access to healthy and nutritious foods, community education and advocacy. Find out more at Foodforpeople.org !

Day Program clients and staff had fun dancing in our โMusic and Movementโ class today!
Scientists have found that the areas of the brain that control memory and skills such as planning and organizing improve with exercise. Dance has the added dimensions of rhythm, balance, music, and a social setting that enhances the benefits of simple movement โ and can be fun!

Clients and staff enjoyed ice cream sundaes today!
Not only are sundaes fun to make, eating ice cream can stimulate the pleasure center in our brain that releases dopamine and endorphins. These neurotransmitters can act as stress relievers, flooding our body with a feeling of pleasure, well-being, and accomplishment!
