A beautiful week for Rescue Training!

In December Oregon's Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) accredited our confined space rescue curriculum for use in training firefighters in Oregon. This means that students who take the class and successfully demonstrate required skills will receive credit towards completing their NFPA Technical Rescue Certification. The class reflects NFPA 1006 and related DPSST standards.

Don't miss our upcoming Forklift Train the Trainer - November 29th in Tualatin, OR. In partnership with the American Society of Safety Professionals Columbia Willamette Chapter, this training will provide experienced forklift operators with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to deliver effective initial and refresher training to your employees.

Heat and Wildfire Smoke: New OROSHA Rules

Oregon OSHA has enacted two rules dealing with weather-caused heat exposure and exposure to smoke resulting from wildfires. There's no question that exposure to both of these can pose serious health hazards, and we would expect the likelihood of these problems to get worse over time.

The new OSHA rules require employers to monitor both heat and air quality. Once action levels are exceeded, employers must institute specific administrative and engineering controls. For heat exposure, employers must provide shade, water, and adjusted work/rest schedules. Smoke exposure can be controlled using respirators, air filtration systems, and suspending outdoor work operations depending on the level of risk. Both rules require employers to conduct risk assessments, provide training, and develop written policies and procedures.
