Surrogacy at Nascency

There’s a stereotype about who becomes a surrogate, and the data doesn’t back it up. A 2024 study of 231 surrogates across the US found their average age was about 36, three in four were married, 86% were working when they started, nearly half were their family’s main earner, and more than seven in ten had education past high school (Reproductive BioMedicine Online).

These are women with careers, households and plans, choosing to help another family on top of all of it.

Most surrogates don’t set out planning this as part of their story they become moms first, then look for a way to help someone else become one too. Long-term research following surrogates over 20 years found most don’t experience lasting psychological difficulty, and women who return for a second or third journey often point to a previous positive experience as what brought them back. “There’s two different kinds of surrogacy traditional, where you use your own eggs, and gestational, where you’re just using your oven. As long as your oven’s working, you don’t need the tubes.”

Most people assume pregnancy requires open fallopian tubes, but gestational surrogacy works differently the embryo, created using intended parents’ or donor’s genetics, is transferred directly into the uterus, bypassing the tubes entirely. It’s why a tubal ligation has no bearing on whether someone can carry as a gestational surrogate. Amy’s kids grew up understanding the basics too she explained her role using a “kangaroo” story, long before they needed the medical version.
