The City of Encinitas is moving forward with a native plant ordinance—an exciting step toward landscapes that conserve water, support pollinators, and thrive in our local climate.

At Kelly Green, native plants aren’t a trend — they’re what we’ve specialized in from the start.

This shift recognizes the value of working with nature, not against it.

From steep slope to sustainable showcase 🌿

This hillside transformation was all about stability, structure, and supporting nature. We built a natural rock retaining wall to reinforce the grade, prevent erosion, and create long-term slope stability — while keeping an organic, coastal look.

Layered throughout the hillside are carefully selected California native plants that thrive in our climate with low water use. The result? Deep roots for soil retention, year-round texture, and a habitat that attracts bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators 🐝🦋

This project blends:

Permeable driveway install + a look back at how native landscapes mature 🌿

We recently completed this permeable driveway installation using a GeoBlock® system by Soil Retention Products. Permeable paving allows water to infiltrate naturally into the soil, helping reduce runoff, erosion, and stormwater impacts while still providing a strong and functional surface for vehicles.

Along with the driveway work, we stopped by to check in on an ADU garden we installed here a few years ago. It’s always rewarding to see California native and climate-adapted landscapes grow in, fill out, and create habitat while remaining low water and low maintenance.

Projects like this highlight how thoughtful grading, drainage solutions, and native planting can work together to support both function and ecology.
