1817 - Francisco Xavier Mina and his men set sail from Galveston with the task of driving Spanish king Ferdinand VII from Mexico. After some minor victories Mina was captured and eventually executed with 25 companions at Fort San Gregorio.

1825 - Green DeWitt successfully petitioned the Mexican government to settle a colony of 400 families in Texas between the Lavaca and Guadalupe Rivers.

1886 - In Laredo, TX, one of the biggest gun battles in the history of the American West began. Political factions began fighting during a celebration parade the day after the elections. It required two companies of the Sixteenth United States Infantry and one company of the Eighth Cavalry to restore peace. The official death toll was 16 but, unofficial reports placed the total close to 30.

1914 - Sam Rayburn took the oath of office as a member of the United States House of Representatives. He served in the house for more than 48 years.

1970 - Texan PFC Milton Lee was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism for overrunning enemy positions and providing covering fire for his platoon during the Vietnam War. He died that day, April 26, 1968, from wounds he had suffered. President Nixon presented the medal to his grandmother.

April 10, 2017, 12:00 noon, at Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Greenview Cemetery.

1830 - Relations between the Texans and Mexico reached a new low when Mexico would not allow further emigration into Texas by settlers from the U.S.

1843 - Four Texas marines were hanged for their participation in a mutiny aboard the schooner San Antonio at New Orleans on February 11, 1842. During the mutiny Lt. Charles Fuller was killed.

1911 - The Elisabet Ney Museum was founded in Austin. It served as one of the earliest centers for artistic development in Texas.

1968 - In San Antonio, HemisFair opened. It was the first officially designated international exposition in the southwestern United States.

1972 - The Texas Rangers' inaugural game was postponed by a players' strike.

2014 - Yu Darvish (Texas Rangers) reached the 500 strikeout mark in fewer innings pitched than any pitcher in Major League Baseball history.

1885 - A fire destroyed the Missouri Pacific Hospital. It was the first hospital in Fort Worth. The hospital was rebuilt and in 1930 had its name changed to St. Joseph Hospital.

1896 - In El Paso, U.S. deputy marshal George A. Scarborough shot constable John Selman. Selman died the next day. Scarborough was acquitted of murder but was forced to resign his position as deputy marshal.

1917 - In San Antonio, Kelly Air Force base began operations.

1997 - The 100th episode of "Walker, Texas Ranger" aired on CBS.
