🌳 Do you have exposed tree roots in your yard? Tree roots are often much shallower than most realize and as a tree matures, more exposed roots may begin to show.
🌿 A tree’s root system serves four primary functions – anchorage, absorption, storage and conduction. These functions play a critical role in the health of trees, so care should be taken to avoid injuring exposed roots, especially when mowing or trimming your lawn. Injuries to exposed roots can also become a point of entry for disease or decay.
🌳 The best solution to avoid injury is to cover the roots with mulch. Apply a thin layer (no more than 3 inches) of organic mulch under the tree’s canopy and over the exposed roots. Mulch not only protects the exposed roots from injury, but also provides other benefits like regulating soil temperatures, conserving water and improving soil health.
