My candle is lit and on the doorstep in honor of Melissa Hortman tonight as requested by the people of Minnesota. Such a senseless tragedy.

One year ago today, a shooter targeting Minnesota Democratic lawmakers assassinated Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman in her home in Brooklyn Park. The assassin also shot and killed her husband, Mark, and the family’s beloved dog, Gilbert.

Melissa was a dedicated lawmaker, mother, and community member who made gun violence prevention a top priority from her first day at the Capitol. For years, she worked alongside Moms Demand Action - MN volunteers and Students Demand Action leaders to protect Minnesotans from gun violence.

Today, we continue Melissa’s legacy of working towards peace and safety for all of us. In honor of Melissa and Mark, we fight to and ensure that no one else will be forced to experience their loved ones’ pain.

Early voting is happening today until Thursday, June 18 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Voters who are in line by 8 p.m. can cast a ballot. A complete list of early voting centers is available online at vote.md.gov/vote2026.
