Add some topiaries to your front entry. Who doesn't like a topiary to greet visitors? Think of tiered topiaries, spirals and even animal shapes who are my favorites. You might like ideas from topiary gardens of the past or try some abstract forms which plants are ideal for that and by the way I am the ideal person to create it because I am an artist who paints, sculpts roots and branches, make des
The Capitol Morning report wrote this about me:
Bird-Shaped Shrub
Our readers continue to sing the praises (via email) of the work of the
mystery topiary artiste who shears designs into the shrubbery around the
Legislative Office Building. (We featured the designs yesterday.) The
groundskeeper (who Department of General Services officials will not
name) appears to have quite a following. Writes Dorothy Korber, a
consultant with the Senate Office of Oversight and Outcomes, who works
in the LOB: "There's a row of similar-vintage state buildings here on N
Street - some have only ivy, others just dirt. Our gorgeous landscaping
is definitely something that sets the Legislative Office Building apart
and makes me proud to be a LOBster." Cathy Cruz, also of the Senate
Office of O and O, writes that she and others in the building have
noticed an improvement in the looks of the shrubbery that have "taken
shape, and very creative shape I must say," Cruz writes. "I take my hat
off to the topiary artiste's work," Cruz adds. And Terry Myrrdin, chief
for facilities oversight at the Secretary of State's Office, wants to
let readers know that the mystery groundskeeper may have left other
markings too. "Look closely at the 'sand' in the tree areas between the
sidewalk and the street up 11th Street (between N and P streets) and you
will also notice signs made by a rake," she writes. Myrrdin adds that
the DGS groundskeeper is an "artist in landscape."
The Capitol Morning Report wrote this about me:
Butterfly-Shaped Shrub
Ever notice that the shrubbery in front of the Legislative Office
Building at 10th and N has been sheared into shapes of animals and
reptiles? Look closely and you'll see a shrub sheared into a bird,
another into a fish and still another into a butterfly. Even the ivy
covered wall hiding the garbage bins in the parking lot along 11th
Street has a moon and butterfly clipped into its greenery. So who is the
topiary artiste whipping up these whimsical shapes in front of an
otherwise non-descript office building? Officials at the Department of
General Services aren't telling. Ken Hunt, a spokesman for DGS, says the
department doesn't offer interviews of its groundskeepers. When asked
about the groundskeeper's designs, Hunt replied that the designs "aren't
standard operating procedure" for DGS. "We appreciate the enthusiasm and
creativity of our employees, but that's not DGS's policy for grounds
keeping," Hunt added. The topiary artiste's work is not going unnoticed
by the workers in the LOB. William Dean, a consultant to the Senate
Subcommittee on Aging and Long Term Care, calls the greenery "absolutely
beautiful." "It brings nature to life around the Capitol," Dean added.
Top Topiary Services specializes in tree and shrub pruning and trimming in the Sacramento and Napa area. I am a self taught topiaryb artist, painter and sculptor , and I take pride in aesthetic pruning and topiary.
Pruning and trimming are very different disciplines.Pruning relies on a variety of different principles such as "Cloud Pruning," thinning of trees, domes or blobs etc. this encourages creative pruning and a deep thinning of unnecessary branches, leaves and needles leading to a minimalist approach.
I often use hand shears and garden scissors for my pruning. Electric trimmers may be used on a general long hedge, for instance, but they will never give the detailed and sculpted look of something done by hand. I consider my pruning is an expression of art and I work with the natural features of a tree or shrub.
Although exotic ornamental trees and topiary art is a specialty, my skills can be applied to a wide variety of landscapes including pools , hedges, spiral specimens etc.
Older and existing shrubs can often be brought to life with creative pruning and sculpting. Working with the tree's natural branch structure, Top Topiary Services can create an original one-of-a-kind specimen shrub.
This can be a slow process of multiple visits over a few seasons to slowly/safely bring out a different shape, but dramatic changes can also be seen. On these photos you will see some shrubs in the middle of a shaping process.
Topiary has been in practice since the days of the Romans who introduced well crafted design elements in their gardens. Topiary is still popular around the world and there are a number of famous gardens dedicated to the art of topiary. Topiaries can also be used in small lawn to create interesting hedges, dividers or shapes. I have been designing Topiary Art for the last 30 years. Pruning is a hard work but enthusiast gardeners like me make pruning fun. With a litle imagination and skill,I can turn your hedges, bushes and small trees into Garden Art.
You might consider having a artistic topiarie designs in your house or business, shapes such as geometrical shapes, fanciful hedges and corporate logos or anything you want to create.
Plants used for designing topiary are usually evergreen and woody shrubs or small trees that produce dense foliage. Some of the suitable plants for topiary include: English Ivy, Ficus Pumila, Rosemary, Thyme, Boxwood, Cypress, azaleas , some grasses, Pittosporum ,and almost all yews and hollies.I have a separate list of plants , shrubs and tress that can be turned into nice shapes.
I work for the State of California as Groundskeeper. If you want to see my artwork come to downtown Sacramento.
