When a good idea hits, it spreads like wildfire, and taxicabs were no exception. The first automobile taxi, the Daimler Victoria, was released in Germany in 1897, but taxi cars quickly found their way to Paris in 1899, London in 1903, and New York in 1907.
In the 1920s, Russian immigrant Morris Markin founded the Checkered Cab Manufacturing Company in Kalamazoo, MI. Sporting a distinctive yellow and black paint job, these cabs soon became the most widely recognized motorized taxi vehicle.
Taxis in action! In the first Battle of Marne in September 1914, 6,000 of the 10,000 French soldiers sent to the front lines went by taxi. It took a fleet 600 strong to get them there from Paris!
There are four distinct types of taxicabs, each of which is identified by slightly differing terms in different countries. These include Hackney carriages (also known as public hire), hailed or street taxis, private-hire vehicles (pre-booked mini cabs or private hire taxis), taxibuses (aka Jitneys, which drive on pre-set routes like busses) and limousines.
In 1891, the first mechanical device capable of measuring the distance and elapsed time used to calculate cab fares was built by German inventor Friedrich Bruhn. Known as the “taximeter,” this device soon led to the creation of new terms like “taxicab” and “taxi.”
Because of the way we structure our fees, you can be sure that not only are you paying the lowest fare possible, but that our drivers are taking the most expedient route available. No worries about an unscrupulous driver taking the “scenic route.”
Why are many taxi cabs painted yellow? In the 1920s, the Checkered Cab Manufacturing Company introduced its yellow-and-black painted cab. By the late 1920s, these cabs comprised 36% of all New York City taxis, which helped establish the iconic look.
If you run into car trouble, but have no one to hitch a ride with, one of our drivers will be more than happy to give you a lift!
In 1899, 90% of taxi cabs in New York were electric vehicles. This electric fleet was built by the Electric Carriage and Wagon Company of Philadelphia.
If you have a business meeting to get to, relying on public transportation can be risky, as you may end up dealing with delays. With our reliable taxi service, we can pick you up promptly and deliver you right to the door of your destination.
The next major innovation for taxicabs after the introduction off the two-way radio came in the 1980s with computer-assisted dispatching. This allowed far more efficient dispatching, scheduling, and tracking.
If safety is a concern, keep in mind that taxi drivers must pass a battery of tests in order to obtain their licenses, and that the cabs themselves are rigorously maintained to keep them in top running condition.
Computers and GPS make communication between taxicabs and dispatch offices lightning fast. Computer-powered dispatch was first introduced during the 1980s, improving upon existing radio systems.
Do you know where the term “taxicab” actually comes from? It stems from the taximeter, which is the instrument invented by Wilhelm Bruhn in 1891 to measure the distance or time a vehicle travels, enabling an accurate fare to be determined.
The good news? Most taxi companies provide service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The better news? Many also offer online scheduling and apps for fast, easy booking. The best news? For convenience, many accept credit cards as well as cash.
Few things are as frustrating as not being able to find an available taxi when you absolutely have to be somewhere on time. Rather than leaving things to chance, you can always contact us ahead of time so that your taxi is at the curb when it’s time to go.
We recognize how frustrating it can be when the friend who’s taking you to the airport doesn’t arrive as early as you’d hoped they’d arrive. When you need to ensure that you don’t miss your flight because of unreliable transportation, we’re always here for you.
One of the first recorded taxi services was founded by Nicolas Sauvage in Paris in 1640. His horse-drawn carriages were known as fiacres, because the depot was near a shrine to Saint Fiacre, and horse-drawn taxis are still called fiacres in France.
We recognize how stressful driving can be when you’re trying to navigate a more congested part of town you rarely go to. If you need to ensure you arrive at your destination perfectly composed, you may want to call for a taxi.
Times change. Today, many people are choosing to sell personal vehicles and bank the proceeds. Why? They use the funds to pay for taxi services, so they can avoid the hassles of driving but retain their freedom and independence.
In football, the term “taxi squad” was coined in 1966. It was used in reference to how the owner (and coach) of the eponymous Cleveland Browns kept reserve players available. He gave them jobs driving taxis as a way to pay them.
The first dedicated taxi (called the Daimler Victoria) was built in 1897 by Gottlieb Daimler. This taxi model was first put into use by Friedrich Greiner, who founded the world’s first motorized taxi company.
If you’re in a noisy bar, restaurant, or shop, it can be hard to hear your phone or make a phone call for a cab. Fortunately, some companies have set themselves up for text orders or text notifications so you don’t have to worry about a call.
Taking a taxi is the perfect way to get around while keeping your hands and mind free to get some work done. Talking on the phone or responding to email while driving is a bad idea, but it's perfectly alright while sitting in the back of a cab.
Is your time at a premium? Arranging for taxi service helps you make the most of every minute. As author and motivational guru Jarod Kintz says, “I became a motivational speaker, because I don’t drive, I’m driven.”
Owning a car was an expensive prospect in the late 1800s, so hiring a temporary car as a taxi seemed like a natural step. In fact, the first automobile taxicab was built by the Daimler company(who later made Mercedes) in 1897, only five years after they sold their first car in 1892.
Wheelchair-accessible taxicabs are most often vans or minivans. Wheelchair-using passengers are loaded aboard with the help of the driver via a lift or ramp at the rear or side of the cab. Emergency exiting can happen through one of two side doors.
Do you have an elderly loved one who has places to go but no reliable transportation? We would love to assist. Our drivers can take seniors to appointments, social outings, shopping, and wherever else they need to go.
While driving your own vehicle may be your preferred way to get around, it can be impossible to take in the scenery while watching the guy riding the brake in front of you. When you want a more relaxing experience, we’re always here for you.
You decide. You can fight rush hour traffic, pay for long-term parking and wait for the airport courtesy van. Or you can arrange to be picked up at your door and dropped off at the curb of the airline terminal.
Public transportation is great if you don’t have to be somewhere at a certain time. Waiting around for a bus or train takes time. Also, the drop off is not at your destination of choice, but rather at the preset destination by the service provider.
