Our very big thanks to new EPM Board Member Dr. Lance Grande, who last evening presented a thought-provoking program on natural history museum curation -- both as you see it on exhibit and behind the scenes -- and the importance of this type of museum's work.

Although we are but a bite-sized Snickers compared to Dr. Grande's 43-year workplace of Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, our ultimate mission is much the same: Build an accessible educational bridge between scientific inquiry and the general public. And do so in a way that is family-friendly, complements school curriculum, and leaves inspired visitors with the desire to learn even more.

Please support natural history museums! We are ironically getting to be an "endangered species." Elgin is quite fortunate to have one. Have you seen us lately? Come visit, Saturday-Sunday 12-4!

Please join us Tuesday evening as we present Dr. Lance Grande, Curator Emeritus of Chicago's Field Museum, and new Board Member at Elgin Public Museum! Dr. Grande will speak on the timely topic of the importance and mission of natural history museums. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free; donations appreciated.

Fun at our Seniors Friday Field Trip! The topic was the history of puzzles, from ancient riddles and mythology to crosswords, Sudoku, and jigsaw puzzles, including interactives! Deb Allan and Linda Howell provided snacks, making it even better! Watch for more Senior Free Friday Field Trips coming up -- we are trying to work them in with our schedule of school field trips, so we're not quite ready to announce the next one yet, but if you follow this page, you'll see it! Tomorrow, Saturday October 3, is our annual Indigenous Peoples Observation Day. It's also a free admission day, so come on out to explore the museum, meet and watch archaeologist Ken Geier as he demonstrates how ancient peoples flintknapped (made arrowheads from flaking chips off of stones -- quite fascinating!) ... and at 2 pm enjoy the music and stories of Native Flutist William Buchholtz, in a free program made possible by a grant from Illinois Humanities. Weather forecast is 66 and sunny. The trees are just beginning to change. The inner zoo is closed for the season but you can walk the perimeter path to see the bison, deer, and elk. Come enjoy Lords Park's many "cool and refreshing retreats, as founder George Lord described them!
