🚨 SCAM ALERT – BARCODE PAYMENT FRAUD 🚨
The Elgin Police Department is warning of a scam where suspects impersonate legitimate companies and demand “urgent” payments via barcode or scan-to-pay methods.
Victims receive texts or emails about fake overdue balances and are pressured to withdraw cash and pay at retail locations using a barcode. The payments go to scammers, not the actual company. These scams may also mimic mortgage companies or utility/bill providers to appear legitimate.
⚠️ Red Flags:
• Urgent payment demands via texts or emails
• Barcode or scan-to-pay instructions
• Pressure to act immediately
• Messages appearing to be from mortgage companies or utility/bill providers
• Unknown or unverified contact information
🔒 Reminder:
• Always verify payment requests using official contact information
• Do not rely on links or instructions sent via text or email
• Check with a trusted family member or friend before making large payments
If targeted, contact your bank and report it to law enforcement. You can also report scams to the Federal Trade Commission.
