While attending the recent ACA 2025 Conference (Australasian Corrosion Association) in Melbourne, Australia last November, attended some excellent presentations. One in particular caught my attention and relates to why we coat concrete for waste-water application work for example with polyurea systems, as a barrier coating system. The following graphic shows the effect of pH (mainly acidic) exposure of concrete, and how much concrete surface can be lost over time.

For example, a 1% solution of Sulfuric Acid (common in waste-water work) has a pH of 1.0. And a 10% solution of Hydrochloric Acid has a pH ~0.8. Overcoating concrete that is acidic, and not properly neutralizing, can lead to further deterioration of the concrete under the applied coating system.

Received this issue and this is what happens when one uses the incorrect material to improperly flush equipment, then improper shut-down and storage. This is especially true with the ISO side with polyurea spray systems. At first, the polyurea material being used was blamed, then went on to blame the spray hose system using. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and industry guidelines, NOT the various cheap, incorrect suggestions found on social media. Just because someone else did it does not make it right….
