U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar renewed her criticism of large-scale data center development during a House Appropriations Committee markup, warning that projects planned for the El Paso region could strain local resources. https://bit.ly/4xaQbD0

Memorial Day was never meant to be a casual holiday, but instead a day of collective reflection and mourning.

Originally known as Decoration Day, the tradition began just after the Civil War as a dedicated time for communities to pause, close local businesses, and decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. Long before it became a federally recognized holiday in 1966, communities across the country were already gathering to honor those who never returned home.

They were gathering to remember brothers, sisters, friends, and loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to a country they loved. They were gathering to honor lives cut short and ensure those sacrifices would never be forgotten.

Here in El Paso, we understand that sacrifice in a very personal way. Ours is a community with deep military roots. For so many of our neighbors, this day isn't just an annual holiday in May — it is a day marked by the absence of those we wish were still here.

When we lose sight of the meaning behind this day, we risk forgetting the weight that military families continue to carry long after the loss itself. For many families, remembrance is not reserved for just one day a year.

As you spend time with loved ones this weekend, I hope that you take a moment to look beyond the noise of the commercial holiday and pause to honor the courage and sacrifice of those who never made it home.

Wishing all you and your families a safe and peaceful Memorial Day.

Last week’s groundbreaking was a proud moment and a meaningful step toward our defense manufacturing future. It’s also a reminder of what Democrats do when we’re in the majority.

Conversations with the Biden administration and our Democratic majority secured the $40 million in federal funding in 2021 that launched the Advanced Manufacturing District— an investment that will produce support for local manufacturers, opportunities for entrepreneurs and high quality jobs.

This funding will create a strong pipeline for innovation in El Paso.

And just as important, we’re working to keep talent in El Paso so our students and skilled workers can build their futures here, not somewhere else.

This is how we grow our economy and invest in our community for the long term.

A huge thank you goes out to Dr. Ahsan Choudhuri for his visionary work on this grant and his focus on developing aerospace manufacturing in our region and my gratitude also to the City of El Paso for taking leadership on this grant to get it over the finish line!
