Bay Area Network of Jewish Officials (BANJO 🪕) Players:
Council Members, Mayors, School Board Members, DA’s, County Superviors, Assembly Members, State Senators
We represent the Bay Area Jewish diaspora is that increasingly misunderstood, wildly complex, and incredibly diverse. Borrowing from the traditions of Q***r organizing, BANJO is not a monolith of hegemony. Instead, BANJO is a space for peope connected to the Jewish experience to come together and marvel in our differences, while preserving and advocating for our right to safely belong.
Thank you to the team for dreaming up this group and making BANJO happen.
Wish I had the time to tag every colleague because WOW what a group!

El Cerrito is officially off the CA State Auditor’s High Risk list for the first time in YEARS 🎉 This was NOT an accident. Significant work done by many stakeholders helped move us out of the High Risk category. It took changes to our operational practices, it took better performance management, and the help of ARPA funds and a strong housing market made it so we could actually build a meaningful reserve.
There is still so much work to be done. I’m not naïve enough to think that any City could move between High Risk and Low Risk from one fiscal year to the other. Moving into the Moderate Risk category is an important milestone and achievement. We are either building upwards upon our success, or we are falling backwards. It is my read that we are indeed building upwards upon our success.
I will also say that we have not made enough of a dent in our pension liabilities, and with economic instability always looming, we cannot sit comfortably. I want to make clear that my personal decision-making is rooted in us NEVER being in a High Risk category again. When I ran for office, I told anyone who would listen that fiscal recovery will take many years. We are now officially seeing it in action.
Note that the images are trimmed to scale, so view on the auditor’s website for more detail. The second image has us listed with other Bay Area communities in the same Moderate Risk profile.
Thank you to my colleague who I serve along with on the El Cerrito Budget Subcommittee.
