Church of Hope
Open House: Sat June 20, 10am-Noon
(3818 S Angeline in Seattle's Columbia City Neighborhood)

For the first time in a generation (since the 1990s!), the NW WA Synod is celebrating the building of a brand new church!

Columbia City Church of Hope began as a Mission Development in 2010 and chartered as a congregation in 2017. The neighborhood—and the church—have been growing quickly over the past decade, and will continue to draw vibrant and diverse community to this bright and welcoming space.

Building on the legacy of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Church of Hope is partnering with El Centro de la Raza on an award-winning six-story development that includes 87 units of affordable family housing, a child-care center, and a new church. The housing is already finished and fully occupied.

Church of Hope will build out the interior of the new space this year: a small and simple but well-designed and versatile space that will function not only as a sanctuary, but as a living room for the community—welcoming 12-step groups, community gatherings, live music, and more. 90% of the costs of the project have already been met, and we need to raise $250,000 to finish the job.

2nd Sunday After Pentecost | Jesus invites all to the table, come & see

Pride matters because people matter.

Representation matters… because when people can see themselves reflected in a community, they know they belong. They know they are welcomed, valued, and loved for who God created them to be.

For many LGBTQIA+ people, finding a faith community has not always been easy. Too often, churches have been places of exclusion rather than belonging. Pride reminds us that there is still important work to do in creating communities where everyone can show up fully as themselves without fear of judgment or rejection.

As a Reconciling in Christ congregation, ELC celebrates the beautiful diversity of God’s creation. We believe every person is a beloved child of God, worthy of dignity, respect, and love.

If Jesus came to Edmonds today, who would people criticize Him for spending time with?

This Sunday's Gospel tells the story of Jesus calling Matthew, a tax collector, to follow him. Almost immediately, Jesus finds himself sharing a meal with people others considered outsiders, sinners, and unworthy of belonging.

When religious leaders questioned why Jesus shared a meal with "tax collectors and sinners," Jesus responded:

"I desire mercy, not sacrifice."

It's a simple statement that still challenges us today. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus consistently moves toward people others avoid. He sits at tables others refuse to join. Jesus extends dignity where others draw boundaries. Sees others as beloved children of God where others see labels. What might it mean for us to follow a Savior who consistently chooses relationship over exclusion?

How do we practice mercy in a world that is quick to divide people into "us" and "them"? What could Jesus' example teach us about who belongs at the table?

Join us this Sunday as we wrestle with these challenging questions and explore the expansive grace of God.

Many of us are carrying more than we expected.

Responsibilities. Appointments. Worries. Decisions. Grief. Joy. Hope.

Sometimes faith isn't about having all the answers. It maybe simply remembering that we do not carry life's burdens alone.

As we move through this week, may you find moments of rest, signs of beauty, and reminders of God's presence in ordinary places, like Annie's Kitchen. Where a conversation with a friend, a walk outside, a shared meal, or a quiet moment of prayer rest can make all the difference.
