Patrick Hardwoods, a subsidiary of Patrick Lumber Co. Since 1915 , is off and running, the new sawmill approaching its first anniversary of being operational.

Patrick Lumber Company serves a broad range of markets, with a strong presence in the molding and millwork sectors – lumber products for cabinetry, flooring and case goods manufacturing. The company primarily sells to distributors and manufacturers. Lower-grade and green lumber products typically are supplied for pallet and crate manufacturing.

The company is one of America’s earliest lumber trading firms and an intermediary wholesaler in the lumber supply chain. Founded in 1915, Patrick Lumber has long been based in Portland. The company relocated after purchasing the former Mary’s River Lumber Co. property near Philomath in 2016 although it maintains an office in Portland.

It operates several subsidiaries: Wood Source, established in Colorado in 2000; Patrick Lumber Manufacturing, established in Philomath in 2016; and Patrick Hardwoods, in 2025. Together they employ more than 100 people and support a diverse portfolio of lumber manufacturing and distribution services.

Patrick Lumber entered the hardwood sector to pursue niche market opportunities for underutilized West Coast hardwood species. The company’s broader goal is to create new markets and add value for underutilized hardwood species in Oregon. The strategic move also aligns with the company’s established trading relationships with hardwood distributors and end users, enabling it to expand its product offerings and market reach.

What does a modern logging operation look like on the steep, challenging ground of Northern California?

For Green Diamond, it includes Madill yarders, Cat equipment, a new John Deere 959M feller buncher, tethered machines, grapple carriages, processors and even a heavy-lift drone.

The company has steadily increased mechanization across its California operations, including adding an Acme GS23 grapple carriage to a Madill 255B yarder. On mechanically felled and arranged cable units, Green Diamond says the setup has increased average production by approximately 50% compared with setting chokers.

The changes are also allowing the company to do more with its existing crews. Green Diamond is now producing a similar amount with two full-time yarders as it previously did with three, while staging a third machine ahead to help reduce delays from moves and breakdowns.

It’s an interesting look inside a large-scale California logging operation and how equipment, technology and experienced crews are changing the way timber gets to the landing.

With 20 employees, three owner-operators and every stage of the operation handled in-house, Boulder Ridge Trucking & Logging has built a business focused on efficiency. From cutting and processing to loading and hauling, the company relies on its own crews, equipment and fleet of Peterbilt log trucks to keep wood moving.

Boulder Ridge continues to invest in newer equipment, operating Komatsu and Timbco feller bunchers, Caterpillar skidders, John Deere and Link-Belt machines paired with Waratah processors. The company also performs nearly all equipment repairs and truck maintenance in-house, with only major engine repairs completed externally.

Recently named the 2025 Eastern Oregon Operator of the Year, Boulder Ridge was recognized for a thinning project that reduced wildfire risk while improving the health of overcrowded ponderosa pine stands.
