Building friendships and sibling relationships🧍🏻‍♀️🧍🏻with joint leisure skills. To name a few, cooperative play requires communication🗣️, listening👂 delegating, emotion regulation 😮‍💨, persistence, and sharing of control ♾️ in a play theme or common goal 🎯 If cooperative play is a challenge 😮‍💨, your child may be lacking one or more of those skills. The good news is those skills CAN be taught 😉📈!!

I’m an intermittent, unpredictable reinforcement schedule 🤓 🤓 To greatly increase and improve a behavior 📈, quickly move from rewarding each instance to ➡️ rewarding only sometimes 🎲 & keep the timing of the reward unpredictable ⏰ 🤷‍♀️ . As Dr. Greg Hanley says, “Keep the hope alive”! 💛 🩵

To the casual observer 👀 we’re friends grabbing lunch or running errands 🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♀️ , when in fact we’ve taken ABA to the community 🏬 ☕️ 🥪 🍽️ We always plan for generalization💪 rather than sit back and hope it just happens! Literally, goals 💜 💜

All my reinforcers out here are 65F temperature, quiet except for birds, the sight, and behind the lens is my dog playing chuck it while I drink a latte with my husband. In this moment, my reinforcement is complete. Learn about synthesized reinforcement and why todays behavior analysts are no longer isolating motivations for behavior (including problematic behavior) into attention, escape, demands, tangibles, or sensory by going to Greg Hanley’s Practical Functional Website 🤓 ✨

ACT is a behavior analytic practice that works to improve psychological flexibility. In a 🥜 🐚 Defusion is just one angle and works on acceptance of uncomfortable or painful thoughts/feelings. Feeling stuck is incredibly frustrating and often leaves us feeling exhausted and powerless against intrusive thoughts. If we are successful with distractions, success is usually short lived; before the thoughts return stronger than ever. Defusion allows us to observe our experience of the feeling, but from an outside perspective. For example, saying “My mind is telling me I’m a failure” vs “I am a failure” reminds us that we are not always what our mind is telling us we are. Defusion exercises teach us that feelings come and go. That while a feeling or thought may be painful, it is not a threat to you, and what your mind is telling you to do, is not a rule you have to follow.

The Balance Program is rooted in the Skills-Based Treatment model, researched and developed by Dr. Greg Hanley. In the Balance Program, we coach parents on how to achieve 50/50 balance between child-led and parent-led time. Balance has several primary benefits to the parent-child relationship and the child develops meaningful skills chosen by the parent OR parent and child. The most apparent outcomes we witness when coaching parents on Balance are 1) relationship and trust building, 2) learning to truly listen and give up control, and 3) learning to effectively shape skills without evoking (emerging and not yet severe) problem behavior. In addition to gaining skills during adult-led time, the child learns to communicate, handle denials, relinquish control, and ultimately show cooperation with their grown-ups when needed.
