🌟International Nurse Spotlight🌟 Ethel Caguitla, an RN at Moose Lake Village in Moose Lake, MN shares her experience moving to Minnesota from the Philippines to work in senior care:

💠What inspired you to leave your home country of the Philippines and pursue nursing in senior living here in Minnesota?

I am one of those who believe that nursing is the profession that will take me to places. I decided to come to the United States not only for professional growth but also to challenge myself and experience a different healthcare system. I worked in Dubai for almost 9 years and this greatly affected my decision and outlook in this profession. Working in senior living appealed to me because I enjoy building meaningful relationships with residents and hearing their life stories. Moving to Minnesota was a big step, but it has given me opportunities to grow both personally and professionally while doing what I love.

💠Does nursing care differ in your home country compared to Moose Lake Village?

I often say that the caring is the same, but the standards are different. Nurses in both countries (or even in Dubai) are equally compassionate and dedicated to their patients. However, the healthcare system in the United States has different regulations, documentation requirements, staffing structures, and resources that support resident care. At Moose Lake Village, there is a strong emphasis on resident autonomy, quality of life, and interdisciplinary teamwork. Here, they also have their advance directive which is not explicitly practiced in the Philippines. While I brought the same passion for caring with me from the Philippines, working here has helped me learn new standards and approaches that have made me a better nurse.

💠What advice would you give to other international nurses who are considering working in long-term care or assisted living in the United States?

I would tell them to be confident in their skills and not be afraid to step outside their comfort zone. Moving to a new country can be challenging, and there will be times when you miss home or have to adjust to different ways of doing things. However, every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. Long-term care is a wonderful field because you get to form lasting relationships with residents and truly make a difference in their lives. Stay open-minded, ask questions, and embrace the experience.

💠What is something fun that you have done in Minnesota?

I have enjoyed experiencing all four seasons, especially seeing snow and the beautiful fall colors. Coming from tropical country those are the things that mainly excites me. Living here has allowed me to experience many new things while meeting wonderful people along the way.
