Though the Chieftain Chair has become one of the most celebrated pieces in Danish design history, its creation was surprisingly unassuming.

Finn Juhl remained modest about the development process, often downplaying any deliberate intention behind the design. Reflecting on it years later, he described how the idea came together almost spontaneously:

“I started drawing the Chieftain Chair one day in the spring of 1949. I was at home, and I started drawing a small sketch around 10 AM with just four vertical lines connected with something. By two or three o’clock in the morning, I had painted it. But in reality, I don’t know how long it took me to design that chair. Perhaps I had a vague idea for some time that I wanted to design something bigger. There had been so many small, handy chairs, so I probably felt like designing something a bit more pompous…”

"What you see is what you see." —Frank Stella (1936-2024)

Frank Stella coined the above phrase, which became the unofficial motto of the Minimalist movement. He was a trailblazer in both Minimalism and Maximalism, leaving his undeniable mark on the art world.

Stella told stories through shapes and geometry, and today, we celebrate his story. Over an art career that spanned more than six decades, Stella shifted from commanding Minimalist paintings he described as nothing more "a flat surface with paint on it" to striking and geometric sculptures full of dynamic energy.
